Five Valpak services to help your business meet COP26 objectives and become more sustainable

In the wake of COP26, Lucy Randle outlines five Valpak services that can help businesses to achieve carbon reduction objectives.

In the wake of COP26, where representatives from 151 countries gathered to agree plans for emissions reduction by 2030 (and work towards limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C), the spotlight is now more than ever on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Valpak offer a range of services to help clients reduce emissions, align with COP26 goals and be a force for positive change. With our help, our clients can find the best possible ways to maximise efforts towards carbon reduction across all areas of their supply chains.

Lifecycle Analysis

Our Streamlined Lifecycle Analysis (LCA) service provides insight into the overall environmental impact (including not only greenhouse gas emissions, but other impacts such as water use), of a business’s products and packaging, and we can identify hotspots in supply chains so improvements can be made. We have carried out LCAs on various items ranging from video games to baked bean packaging, and bioplastics to duvets.

Carbon footprinting and management

We have carried out carbon footprinting projects wherein emissions data throughout the supply chain is collated and used to identify opportunities for improvement, or benchmark against competitors’ data and more sustainable options. The metrics we develop can be used by our clients to monitor their environmental performance and carbon footprint tracking over time.

Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR)

Our Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) service helps businesses to act on the measurement, management, and mitigation of greenhouse gases. This service involves collation of emitting activities data within supply chains, carbon footprinting, benchmarking of product footprints, carbon hotspot identification, and tracking target progress.

Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS)

We have developed a scheme to fulfil a businesses’ Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) compliance requirements, helping clients to measure total energy consumption and to find areas of significant consumption. We will carry out an ESOS-compliant audit, which means our clients can rest in the knowledge that compliance with the EU Energy Efficiency Directive is guaranteed.

Packaging comparison analysis

We can provide a detailed packaging comparison analysis to provide unique insights, helping businesses to:

  • understand where their packaging stands in comparison to competitors
  • design packaging for reuse or recyclability
  • cut down on total materials used by switching to alternative packaging styles, helping to reduce emissions

Our new bespoke packaging comparison analysis will establish how a business measures up in terms of packaging weight and recyclability, and where it needs to make switches to reduce resource use and, in turn, carbon footprint (as well as reducing packaging compliance costs).

Other ways we can help…

We are currently carrying out a project for a client to develop a tailored sustainability strategy. We will conduct a market review, research customer expectations, compile existing sustainability initiatives, measure a baseline for improvement, and suggest where improvements can be made.
